Overview

The BMW iX is an all-electric mid-to-large luxury SUV from the German BMW Group, serving as the flagship model of the marque's EV SUV stable. First unveiled in November 2020, its design draws heavily from the Vision iNEXT concept shown at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Built as a ground-up bespoke EV on a dedicated electric platform, the BMW iX has no ICE equivalent, representing a key milestone in BMW’s electrification roadmap. In 2025, the BMW iX received a mid-lifecycle facelift (LCI), bringing noticeable upgrades to its powertrain, driving range, and exterior styling. In mainland China, the official retail price of the BMW iX ranges between RM746,900 and RM1,009,900; in Taiwan, the facelifted iX is offered across three variants—xDrive45 Excellence, xDrive45 M Sport, and xDrive60 M Sport—with prices starting from RM3,380,000.
Design Language
The exterior styling of the BMW iX centres around a minimalist and high-tech futuristic aesthetic. Up front, the signature kidney grille is fully blanked off, featuring smoked diagonal mesh-pattern graphics. It integrates driver assistance sensors such as cameras and radars, complemented by BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting and a segment-exclusive self-healing polyurethane coating. The facelifted model adopts redesigned LED headlights featuring vertical daytime running light (DRL) signatures. Along the flanks, frameless windows and flush door handles create a clean, aerodynamic silhouette. Following the mid-cycle refresh, the M Sport aerodynamic package is now fitted as standard across the range for the first time, including M-specific aero bits, 21-inch M alloy wheels, and blue M Sport brake calipers. At the rear, slim horizontal tail lamps are housed within clear lens enclosures. The drag coefficient is rated at an impressive 0.25 Cd. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,953 mm long, 1,967 mm wide, and 1,695 mm tall, with a generous 3,000 mm wheelbase. The exterior colour palette has been expanded with seven new shades, including Speed Blue, Dune Grey, and Carbon Black.
Inside, the iX continues its avant-garde exterior design theme. The centrepiece of the cabin is the BMW Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen into a single floating unit. The centre console retains the crafted crystal iDrive controller and rocker-style gear selector. The cabin makes extensive use of natural leather upholstery, FSC-certified open-pore wood trim, and premium CraftedClarity glass applications. The one-piece integrated seats come equipped with ventilation, heating, massage, and multi-way powered adjustment. The M Sport variant adds an M multi-function leather steering wheel and M Sport seats.
Powertrain and Performance
The BMW iX is powered by fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology across all variants, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup. Post-facelift, both the model nomenclature and output figures have been updated:
iX xDrive45 (Entry): System output of 300 kW (408 PS) and 700 Nm of torque. 0-100 km/h is dealt with in 5.1 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h. WLTP-rated range stands at 490–602 km, powered by a 94.8 kWh usable battery pack.
iX xDrive60 (Core): System output of 400 kW (544 PS). Completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h. WLTP range ranges from 563 to 701 km, making it the first fully electric BMW production model to cross the 700 km range threshold. Usable battery capacity is rated at 109.1 kWh.
iX M70 xDrive (Flagship Performance): Delivers 485 kW (659 PS) and a massive 1,100 Nm of torque. 0-100 km/h is dispatched in just 3.8 seconds, on to an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h. WLTP range is rated between 521 and 600 km, with a 108.9 kWh usable battery.
The inverter adopts advanced silicon carbide (SiC) power modules, optimising peak motor output and overall energy efficiency. For DC fast charging, the xDrive45 supports charging rates of up to 175 kW, while the xDrive60 and M70 handle up to 195 kW.
Chassis and Handling
Under the skin, the BMW iX is equipped with adaptive two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling as standard across the range. When Sport mode is selected via My Modes or when cruising at higher speeds, the suspension automatically lowers ride height by 10 mm to improve aerodynamic stability; for tackling rough surfaces, ground clearance can be raised by 20 mm via a toggle switch on the centre console.
Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel steering) is also standard fitment, offering up to 3.2 degrees of rear-wheel angle. At speeds under 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn opposite to the front wheels for tighter manoeuvrability; above 80 km/h, they turn in phase to enhance high-speed stability and lane-change composure.
Cabin and Equipment
On the connectivity front, the BMW iX runs on the latest BMW Operating System 8.5. The system supports Augmented Reality (AR) navigation, BMW Digital Key Plus (compatible with iOS and selected Android devices), 5G connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) remote software upgrades. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant features natural voice recognition.
Creature comforts include four-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic glass roof with electrochromic shading, and ventilated and heated front seats as standard equipment. Audiophiles can look to higher-spec variants, which pack a 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond 4D Surround Sound system.
Safety and Driver Assistance
For safety, the BMW iX comes standard with the comprehensive BMW Personal CoPilot suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Key features comprise Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Lane Keeping Assistant, Front Collision Warning with pedestrian detection, Blind Spot Detection, 360-degree Surround View camera, BMW Drive Recorder, Remote 3D View, Parking Assistant, and Reversing Assistant. The facelifted model adds Active Lane Change Assistant—a gentle tap of the indicator stalk prompts the system to scan for oncoming rear traffic and perform an automated lane change autonomously.
For extended automated driving, the iX offers the optional Level 2+ Highway Assistant. On dual-carriageway expressways with physical central dividers, the system allows hands-free driving at speeds of up to 130 km/h. This suite also incorporates Active Lane Change with eye confirmation, allowing drivers to execute lane changes simply by glancing at the corresponding exterior side mirror.
Market Performance and Verdict
The BMW iX was recognised as the world's best-selling luxury EV in 2023. However, sales momentum has experienced notable headwinds in recent times. In the United States, deliveries peaked at 17,301 units in 2023 before steadily declining to 15,383 units in 2024 and 12,587 units in 2025. In Q1 2026, US sales dropped sharply by 50.7% year-on-year to just 1,788 units. Consequently, BMW announced the discontinuation of the iX in the US market in 2026. Meanwhile, in China, combined monthly sales of BMW’s core EV lineup averaged around 4,660 units from January to October 2025.
Industry consensus praises the BMW iX for its dependable real-world range, charging performance, and innovative sustainable cabin materials. Nonetheless, its premium pricing and polarising exterior styling remain distinct hurdles. As the Bavarian brand’s pioneer bespoke electric flagship SUV, the iX set high technical benchmarks in the luxury EV space thanks to its Gen5 eDrive platform, up to 701 km of range, and sophisticated chassis engineering. With the rollout of BMW’s next-generation "Neue Klasse" models underway, the iX is now entering the sunset phase of its product lifecycle, gradually passing the baton to the marque's next wave of all-electric offerings.
